How we developed...

The Brunswick Fire Company, No. 1 Inc. was founded in 1943 and organized in 1944. The early members of the company built their first truck (shown to the left), using an Army surplus trailer pump and a 1938 Dodge chassis, for about $1,000. At times, the firemen had to push the truck to get it running. The truck was kept in Archie Jones' garage at 566 Hoosick Road until the company built a firehouse on the land donated by Mr. Jones.  Below and to the right is the original firehouse which was constructed in 1945. This building had 5 apparatus bays, (2 in the front of the building facing Hoosick St., 2 in the back facing Sycaway Ave., and 1 on the side of the building), a recreation room and office on the main level and Banquet Hall and kitchen on the lower level. The building served the company well for nearly 50 years, however it became evident that with the increasing size of apparatus, building degradation and need for more offices and storage that a new building would be required.  It was officially decided in 1992 that the original building would be demolished to make room for the existing fire house and to the left is a photo of the actual demolition. As previously noted, the original building's design, though satisfied the necessities of yesteryear, was becoming outdated with the constant developments of apparatus and personal equipment deemed a priority to perform the duties of serving and protecting the community.   The picture located  to the right is that of the building located on 566 Hoosick Rd. Having been constructed in 1992, this building was necessary with the need for modern apparatus.  Features which make the new station more compatible with the modern day needs are 5 apparatus bays with Plymovent exhaust removal systems, a storage loft in the rear of the bays, a meeting hall which serves also as a kitchen, a recreation room on the second floor with an exercise room and offices for the executives (Board of Directors, Line Officers, the President, and the Chief).
