Engine 4-4 was designed at the same time with our 2008 Sutphen 100’
SPH tower, Truck 4. It took nearly 2 years from the start of the
design and specification process to delivery. The concept and
design is an enhanced version of our 2005 Sutphen, Engine 4-2.
Engine 4-4 is one of the first apparatus built by Sutphen using
totally new engineering and design in order to meet federally
mandated ‘2007’ emission standards. The ‘new’ Detroit Diesel was
re-designed, and while its displacement remains the same as the
engine in Engine 4-2, it is larger is size. Sutphen (and almost
every fire engine manufacturer) had to re-design their chassis. The
cab is 4” wider, and the suspension has a longer spring package and
an air ride suspension that enhances ride quality. Engine 4-4 is
primarily used as a ‘hydrant’ or relay pumper, but it also responds
to mutual aid calls.
